WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH THESE THINGS!?!?!?

I really got to find out what these things are called. For a lack of what they may be, these will be called "J-fold" side cards from compact disks as they sit shrink wrapped in the store. They seem to act as an extra advertisement that says "no, buy me!" They sort of mimic the look of a digi-pak, but conceal yet another jewel case. They are found often on import CDs in addition to releases from Ryko and Tzadik. To most people they simply serve as superfluous packaging to be discarded. I sort of dig them. Yes, they are a bit wasteful but they make great bookmarks. I have so many of them though (as indicated by this small glance at my music collection). It may be time for them to serve a greater cause. Epoxied to a table top? Shadow box or framed collage, hanging on the wall? They have much craft and graphic design potential. I don't know.

Here's some typical Cleveland stuff: One of the city's ugliest sights, aptly nestled right next to the FOX 8 Studios Building– the old Howard Johnson’s Motor Inn (5700 South Marginal Road) - viewable from I-90, ready for demolition is "saved" by a judge intervention.
Read the story HERE! So irritating!!! It was suggested that the city didn't give the current owner "a fair shot to get their project going."
Anyways, it was also irritating to obtain these photos due to the diligent security staff on hand.
Even though I parked next door to the HOJO property to take a few pictures, I managed to agitate the vigilance and steadfast prowess of the rent-a-cop/security personnel. Oh no.

Let's see, it went something like this:

"Who are you?!?!"

"What (are) you doin(g)?!?!?!"

After she continued to yell and I explained that I was "photographer," she continued to yell and make clear that she is somehow an authority.
As I stepped forward towards the HOJO lot (still on the sidewalk) to speak calmly to her, she then screamed:
"Don't come onta da property!!!!"
My reply:
"I'm not, I'm on the sidewalk. I was just trying to communicate with you because you were yelling at me from a distance."
Her reply:
"You can't take no pictures!!!!!"
My reply:
"Oh yes, yes I can."
So this went on like that for a few minutes or so.
I eventually went around the side and back of the next door property and took a few shots from that perspective. This was a great view of the gaping wrecking-ball wound.

Upon leaving I just waved "good-bye" to the guard and shrugged.

Art Behind Bars! Asterisk Gallery 6-6-09 (part 2)

Dana L. Depew of the Tremont Asterisk Gallery created a triptych based on three different drawings by serial killers John Wayne Gacy and Richard Ramirez. The drawings include:
"Red Skull" (2000) by R. Ramirez, "Jackie" (1994) and "Mona Lisa" (1993) by J. W. Gacy.
Depew's work, "Chain Gang (Rubberneck Composition)" (2009) is a mixed media monster!
Depew's realization of this triptych is an elegant treatment/commentary or collective response to these drawings of murky origin.

The Drawn and Quartered Draw Off took place this past Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Asterisk Gallery in the Tremont neighborhood of Cleveland. Participants were given various models and time constraints, in which to capture and represent! Artist groups present included: Tim Herron and the Tremont Pretentious Artists (who usually dwell at the Literary Cafe every Friday Night), The Murray Hill Group, N.O.I.S. (The Northern Ohio Illustrators Society) and Dr Sketchy.

It was a treat to witness all of these talented groups come together and have a great time.

I recently checked out a new(er) micro-brewery here in Cleveland, INDIGO IMP. The Indigo Imp Brewery is located at 3615 Superior Avenue in Cleveland, Ohio in Tyler Village. Out for drinks at Great Lakes Brewery with some old friends earlier in the evening to celebrate the completion and imminent release of the Impact;Woven (that semi-colon is for real, people) project CD that's been in the making since Thanksgiving '05. Wow.

About 12 o'clock I kidnapped Mike and Dan and took them to Now That's Class--a bit of culture shock for them perhaps, but ultimately I think that's exactly what they needed.

Missed out on the Dead Peasant Insurance last-minute fill-in. Always seem to just miss any show Ryan K is playing. It's not intentional. Just bad timing. Chief Bromide had probably just gotten onstage, so we got our refreshments and headed into the music room (head-bustin' loud, as always). They had a mood going there--dark blue lighting and dark downer psych.

That's a damn fine mood to be in.

I've seen Matt Valerino play with lots of different bands over the past few years, but this is the first time I've seen Chief Bromide, and I'm pretty sure that's "his" band moreso than any of the others. If not then he should just say it is, because Chief Bromide is hands down heads above anything else he's associated with. First off, there's actual songs (though of course we're talking about Now That's Class, so no one could hear any vocals). Good old song structure...nice to have that every once in awhile.

Matt traded riffs with a lovely young lady on a red guitar and another lovely young lady on a low-end heavy keyboard (no electric bass, very much like another Cleveland indie-psych band--guess who?). She also played electric violin once or twice. Drummer was great, spot-on, power when required. The tunes sucked me in immediately--yeah, you could say I'm down with that psychedelic drone-swirl stuff. I don't care if it's been done a million times before, or that they jam on two chords like VU for 10 minutes at a time. There's enough changes and enough going on with the drums to keep one engaged, if one pays attention to subtlety. I get off on subtlety. Don't like being bludgeoned over the head.

Unless it's 9VHH doing the bludgeoning. Which they did. They brought out the heavy artillery for this here slugfest, they brought out some f---ing attitude (that's not far below the surface for Craig, I'm thinkin'), they brought out a cool Vox guitar (Matt) and they brought out a busted-in-half Strat (Craig), and yes, of course, they brought out a trash can. What 9V show would be complete with some sort of reference to garbage?

Yeah, I don't what the fellas was drinking or eating, but they was filled with ANGST last night, and the music came screaming out with teeth bared and fists pumping too. Beats were fractured and broken, sonic shards of glass shredding tender ear canals (bring your earplugs, dummies). Craig hit the broken Strat pickups (no neck, just a body) with a drumstick or other implement, and he weren't f---ing around, man he was beating that poor bastard. Matt's keyboard was getting tossed around (pretty sure that was a cheapie, not the good one) and then he proceeded to abuse that Vox (Now That's a Crying Shame) and then he got rough with the trash can and I think the Vox ended up in the trash can.

F---in' yikes! The whole set lasted maybe 15 minutes, and everyone wanted more, but Craig looked like he just went 15 rounds with, uhh, some big boxer guy (yeah...I don't follow boxing, so that simile loses), drenched in sweat, so that was it.

"It's fun to have fun."

Tremont Truck Fire, Cleveland 4/6/09

Yikes! Here is some so-so cell phone footage of a truck fire in front of the Merrick House at the corner of West 11th and Starkweather Ave. The truck parked in front of this community center caught fire in the engine and after a few moment there was a loud explosion from within. I only caught this scene after the fire dept showed up. Scary stuff!

Ear Plugs.

Saw some bands last night. This was the very first time that I chose to wear ear plugs for the entire show. It was strange. I was introduced to a few people by friends while hanging out at the bar. This is always awkward, fishing those things out of your ear to hear what they may be saying. One can also just sit there and pretend to hear, pretend to be interested in what they may be saying.
But, that's not nice or genuine. Ear plugs. It is easier to hear certain things when the bands play. High-hats and vocals oddly enough resonate to great degree. All that vibration is quelled. It is rather like hearing in a vacuum. Kills conversation though. It is good to have your hearing remain! (excellent trade off)

Last night, I partied with some of the cats that hold the NOTACON event here in Cleveland. We danced, grilled, drank and had a great time. This one guy (name escapes me) cooked a sweet "Thai"pork roast, had a little "heat" which was quelled by the lemon in the marinade.
Notacon is a technology based event and community with a penchant for the "out there." Cool cats indeed! Someone told me of the presence of Circuit Bent dildos in previous years. This might be a delightful thing to check out this year.

They are from the 198th Infinite # of Sounds gig! We (the 9-Volt Haunted House) and Fluxmonkey performed as well! We all tore it up at the end of the evening together in the "Zombie Jam." This event took place at Bela Dubby in Lakewood, Ohio.

So, within our distracted and silly discussions at band practice we (the 9-Volt Haunted House) found ourselves recalling a few years back when Larry "Wild Man" Fischer performed the "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" show. The footage is HERE. The footage is rather exploitative, as were his dealings with Frank Zappa. Besides that, we did discover that Wild Man Fischer also had some recordings with the comedy dou of Barnes and Barnes. This in turn reminded us of the fish heads video:

Per my previous post, I now have a new phone and I'm taking calls. (how exciting) I was able to retain the contacts stored in the broken phone's memory. (also exciting)
I have corrected the settings for comments here on my blog, so please comment away. They do have to be approved though, but I'm not too fussy. (more excitement)

Catholic churches are consolidating and closing in the Greater Cleveland/Akron area. The list was released over the weekend! One of them (Our Lady of Mercy) a once primarily Slovak parish nestled in the heart of Cleveland's Tremont neighborhood, is about four doors down from where I reside. In between which is another condemned house. We'll see what happens.
I gotta go for now, however this stuff really needs further examination. Holy freaking yikes!!!

Something about the sun...

There is something about the sun, amazing.
I was driving to my office this morning and everything looked great.
Lake Erie was freakin' glowing!!! There were still clouds hovering around, but there was still the right amount of sunlight out there to make even the lousy parts of Cleveland look amazing. I tried to take a few photos, which I'll check out (perhaps) later and get transfer them off my phone. The "rock and roll" hall of fame was awash with light. Morning sunshine is perhaps the most cutting thing. It was not killing my eyes while driving, the way it potentially can (sunglasses or not).
I did see something that made me a bit sad though on West 28th street. (apart from the usual stuff) There were a group of kids walking to school and taunting another child. The kid appeared to be crying and nearly walked in front of my car. He then proceeded to continue walking after my car and up the ON RAMP of the freeway, this I could see from my rear view mirror. Yikes! Where do you think you're going?

Hey!
Things have been busy as of late. Here are a few pictures I took during the giant snow storm we had a few weeks back. I ended up taking an alternate route to my office that morning. This allowed me to enjoy a somewhat surreal and slow version of the city that I was not accustomed to.
This small portfolio spans from West 25th Street, through Downtown and all the way to the Glenville. (home of Superman and the Glenville Riots) These pictures are few and random. Enjoy!

Medical Mart in Cleveland??? Maybe.

Cleveland is still stewing over this whole "Medical Mart" thing. I understand there is a bidding war or a negotiation problem or a site conflict or tax issues (loophole or how we[taxpayers and residents of Cuyahoga County] may be intercoursed over). Maybe it work out and create jobs just like that Euclid Corridor (w/the "Health Line" bus route). Cleveland is accustomed to failure, it is part of our culture.
Cleveland Browns stadium is another fine example of this Cleveland transparency spectre. This structure gets used perhaps eight times a year. (roughly, give or take the NFL calendar) Maybe Billy Graham will come back to town to say some stuff at people, religious stuff. He may need a big ol' venue such as Cleveland Browns Stadium.
There has been much coverage of this Med Mart phenom. WCPN (local NPR) reports frequently on all the trials and tribulations of all the cast of characters involved therein. It is such a depressing account to hear all the possible sites for this albotross. The Flats, Tower City, the Covention Center and blah, blah, blah.....These sites, all failures. Real shame.

Help complete the trilogy! There is more info here on the Ditch Trilogy. His best work as far as I'm concerned! Can't put down ON THE BEACH. Such a good album.

Neil Young's ON THE BEACH is a great album for those seeking a different, non-radio saturated body of work from this artist. It drops a reference to that whole Charles Manson/Dune Buggy thing on the tune Revolution Blues. According to the October 2008 issue of WIRE magazine, ON THE BEACH (1974) the second of a trilogy of albums from Neil Young. This release is also sandwiched by 1973's TIME FADES AWAY and 1975's TONIGHT'S THE NIGHT. I look forward to collecting these other two albums. The I-Tunes store was a great way of tracking them down. Although, they did not have 1982's TRANS.

Well, it is time (this evening) for the final debate between Obama and mc cain.
I still feel nervous about this whole thing. I realize that Obama is ahead in the polls, but it does not stop the strange and unexpected. It may be too late for the republican'ts to attempt a "swift-boat" style attack. At this point, any such attempt may be viewed as a fabrication or sensational ploy. F**K them.
What really bothers me though, is that one of my friends is afraid to display an Obama yard sign on his property. He feels that the would be endangering his family. I told him to be proud of his beliefs and that if you are afraid of your neighbors, perhaps you have made a mistake of living where you do. Be a fighter.
He reminded me how my city councilman and family fell victim to arson not to long ago. However, that was a separate set of circumstances, from what can be gathered in the rumor mill (of Cleveland's west side).
Cleveland should be a place where one can be proud of one's political beliefs, regardless of which neighborhood you live in.

Now that is illegal fireworks season here in Cleveland, our near west side friends are blowing shit up again. Yes, they are illegal in the state of Ohio. However, blam!!! blam!!! BOOM!!!!!
I discovered a fire truck up the street from my home last night putting out a fire in a recycling dumpster which collects newspaper and magazines. Two things: hindering recycling is no good and setting things aflame is far from elegant. A buddy of mine pointed out that is "must be getting more difficult to find new kicks."
Shameful.
In the meantime, our firefighters are occupied with the unneeded dangers of extinguishing dumpster fires.

Lousy Cleveland Sports Weekend

Well, the Cavs blew it. Boston marches on. We won't have to hear from them in a while. My favorite aspect of yesterday's game was Joe Tate and his commentary. The Tribe also blew it, swept in the Queen City by the Reds. Inter-league games are strange. Commentary from the "Voice of the Cleveland Indians" TOM HAMILTON was also enjoyable. During Sunday's game he described the slack-jawed chant of Reds fans as " Reds fans showing their intelligence." Subtle but nasty!
Anyways, the Cavs are done for now. It is time to watch the Indians, hoping they "get it together" as it were.
I will be attending May 23rd's game at "Progressive Field" when they take on the Texas Rangers.
Untill then, I will be enjoying the nightmare that is quiting smoking.

Well, I just began a prescription for smoking. It (via chemical means) keeps nicotine from reaching my brain. We shall see how this works out. It has become clear to me that now is the time to quit.
